2 Weeks Notice

April 28, 2015 By Mullets and Misfortune Leave a Comment

I recently quit my job.  Now I did it right I put in my notice and showed up and did some work for the last two weeks. I am still a professional…an angry one but still a professional.  I have my education and specialized training for the job but don’t you worry on my last day they pulled someone from a different department for me to train in a couple hours. I mean totally not awkward I don’t need any respect for me or the role I played in the organization.

The worst part of this is professional settings, people don’t understand that I made a choice.  I worked thru a huge business sale and choose not to work there for the new owners.  I walked away after “doing the math” making sure I could afford to be out of work for a while. None of this stops folks from acting like I’m “in transition.” Not sure what I’m becoming but I think it is angry at pompous jerks.

Boundaries & Bosses Part 2

One of the Lucys was a real peach, she was always ready to point out mistakes or look down on you past her ridiculous reading glasses perched on the end of her witch nose… I ran into her a local cafe after her Mom has passed away about 6 month after my getting laid off.  (I wasn’t bitter I mean I completely understand after only 4 years of working together to have my name spelled wrong on my dismissal papers that my boss had completed was an added insult to injury right?!?) So I say I was sorry to hear of her Mom’s passing it must have happened quickly.  She goes on to correct me that no it wasn’t quick. Regardless of the details I was not her employee for the past 6 months it wasn’t her place to still be correcting me anymore. As with any kind remark the answer should be thank s or gratitude.

Lucy is a also a huge Sons of Anarchy fan.  She usually actually watches it twice live and loves to spoil it for anyone who didn’t watch it.  Yesterday she was recapping it for a co-worker and got lost in the story so I jumped in to clarify something, which Lucy quickly took back over to tell my why I was wrong.  This was super interesting since one I had watched the show and two I had read the recap online.

I think my favorite Lucy story is someone called her out for not liking their color so they were not doing business at the shop. Lucy who doesn’t seem to understand in 2014 we keep our racist comments to ourselves in a management meeting no less told us all how shocked she was! I almost died listening to the crazy hypocrite carry on.  She ended by telling the customer that she had recently hung out with a black man and that the shop is located in the ‘hood. I still to this day am amazed when I pull up to work and there are no protesters out  front

Boundaries & Bosses Part 1

so·ci·o·path [soh-see-uh-path, soh-shee-] Show IPA
noun Psychiatry.
a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

I have had several not bad but horrible bosses in my time…I will refer to them collectively as Lucy short for Lucifer.

So whatever my next job may be or whoever my next boss may be I have a few questions to ask

Will you ask me personal questions when I request time off?

Will you ask me personal medical questions?  Do you feel comfortable giving me unsolicited medical advice and/or suggesting various home remedies?

Do you feel qualified to speak on subjects you have no knowledge about?

Do you often blindly quote information from chain emails and the “business channel?”

Do you often lie about unimportant matters not realizing folks may discover you have told various stories for no real reason?

Do you feel the need to put down and belittle every single person just to feel better about yourself?

Do you play favorites and make emotional decisions?

More to come in part 2…

Grown Ups?

I struggle with the idea that you can be old but not “grown up.” Growing up I had this idea of older folks as wiser more mature.  I’m always amazed that this often isn’t the case. I’m not saying I don’t appreciate the young at heart but think there should come a time in life to shed that mean girls persona.  I think there comes a time your should stop the gossip, petty behavior and just be a decent person not perfect but less of a jerk on a daily basis…thoughts?

That Guy…

To quote Jimmy Dugan in A League of Their Own, ” It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it.  The hard…is what makes it great.”

We all work with that one person who just doesn’t work.  It’s been my experience that this person, usually peaked in high school, and somehow the world owes them a favor. You can easily pick this person out as the one who talks the loudest, thinks the are the smartest and usually believes they are the center of the universe.

I’ll admit I’m generally in an annoyed state of mind but that guy just drives me nuts.  I said something brutally honest to that guy at work last week, and he accused me of being sarcastic which by definition is the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to say especially in order to insult someone, to show irritation, or to be funny. That is the great thing about him he somehow also deflects and never realized he isn’t doing his part.  There is always a great reason (read BS story) or explanation. I guess this takes us back to the hard part, work and life isn’t always that hard but some folks just can’t or won’t put in the effort.  It’s a shame so many folks in life want the opportunity to work hard and get ahead yet so many have the opportunity to work hard, do right and succeed but are simply there.

*Disclaimer – there are plenty of that gals that have these horrible characteristics but I currently am forced to work with the male version.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

February 11, 2014 By Mullets and Misfortune 1 Comment

What should a first blog post be about?!?  Let’s start by filling in the blanks with a little but more about me than what‘s in the “official” about me section.  I’m currently a 34 year old accountant 90% of the time I can be found at home, work, the gym or Target. (Super exciting – yes I know.) I enjoy reading and mocking the general public.  I think well on my feet and keep my life in order on track most of the time.  I’m already struggling for words and am beginning to think I should have had a bit more written before I started spending money to make this (possibly silly) dream a reality.  I want to write and think I would make a great (read amazing) advice columnist.  I feel like I’m not really a people person but I am always amazed at the things people will share with me.  I work to set a good example although most of the time, especially at work I would love nothing more than to throw myself down on the floor and let loose the mother of all temper tantrums.  Mature yes I know but the difference is I’m only thinking it not doing it! I am that weird age in life where I understand the value of a day’s work and the concept of paying ones dues. I guess this is an awkward start but more to come…
